Spanish quantum software company Multiverse Computing has raised $215 million in a Series B funding round, aiming to make artificial intelligence (AI) models smaller and more efficient for use on smartphones and other edge devices.

The funding round, led by European investors, marks a significant step for the company as it seeks to address one of the biggest challenges in AI today: running powerful models on devices with limited computing power.

Multiverse Computing, based in San Sebastián, specializes in quantum and classical algorithms for finance, energy, manufacturing, and now, AI. The company’s new focus is on “shrinking” AI models—reducing their size and computational requirements so they can run directly on consumer devices without relying on cloud servers. This approach promises faster, more private, and more energy-efficient AI applications, which is particularly important as demand for on-device AI grows in the smartphone industry.

The $215 million investment will help Multiverse expand its research and development, hire additional talent, and accelerate commercial partnerships with smartphone manufacturers. The company’s technology could allow users to access advanced AI features—such as image recognition, language translation, and personal assistants—without sending data to the cloud, enhancing privacy and reducing latency.

Multiverse Computing’s breakthrough comes as AI models, such as those powering chatbots and image generators, have become increasingly large and resource-intensive. By making these models smaller, Multiverse hopes to enable a new generation of AI-powered apps that work offline and protect user data.

A notable example is Amazon’s substantial investment in AI infrastructure, marked by a proposed $20 billion expansion in Pennsylvania. This expansion aims to build two large data centres. This initiative highlights Amazon’s commitment to advancing its computing capabilities amid a global race in AI development, with other major tech companies, such as Meta and OpenAI, making similar moves. Beyond the technological aspect, Amazon also plans to collaborate with educational institutions and workforce organizations in Pennsylvania to cultivate local tech talent.
