U.S. government shutdown continues; National Nuclear Security Administration funds can only last about 8 days
Jinse Finance reported that U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright stated that due to the ongoing government shutdown, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) under the Department of Energy has enough funding to maintain full operations for only about 8 days, after which it will have to enter "emergency shutdown procedures." Wright said that if funds are exhausted, the NNSA will retain only a small number of personnel to ensure the safety of nuclear weapons, but this will severely disrupt overall operations. Previously, the NNSA was responsible for key tasks such as maintaining the nuclear arsenal, nuclear nonproliferation, and naval nuclear propulsion systems, involving 65,000 employees and contractors.
