LangChain has secured $125 million in new funding, bringing its valuation to $1.25 billion, according to the company's announcement on Monday. Back in July, TechCrunch revealed that the company behind the widely used open source AI agent framework was seeking additional investment at a valuation of at least $1 billion. IVP led this funding round, as previously noted, with CapitalG and Sapphire Ventures joining as new backers, alongside returning investors Sequoia, Benchmark, and Amplify.

Launched in 2022 by machine learning engineer Harrison Chase, LangChain started as an open source initiative. The company quickly gained traction in the AI community by addressing challenges in building applications with early LLMs, such as web search, API integration, and database interaction. The project rapidly gained popularity, prompting Chase to establish a startup and secure a $10 million seed investment from Benchmark in April 2023. Just a week later, Chase closed a $25 million Series A led by Sequoia, which reportedly valued LangChain at $200 million.

As leading model developers have expanded their infrastructure, LangChain has transformed into a comprehensive platform for agent development. Alongside its announcement of unicorn status, the company also introduced updates across its core offerings, including the LangChain agent builder, the orchestration and memory management tool LangGraph, and the testing and observability suite LangSmith. LangChain continues to be a favorite among open source developers, boasting 118,000 stars and 19.4 thousand forks on GitHub.
