Character.AI has introduced a new interactive fiction tool called "Stories" specifically for teenagers, replacing its previous open-ended chatbot feature due to increasing worries about mental health and regulatory oversight

. This update, which takes effect this week, prevents users under 18 from having unrestricted conversations with AI chatbots, a change the company refers to as a "safety-first approach" . With the Stories feature, teens can craft guided stories alongside AI characters, enjoying a more structured, visual, and replayable format . Users are able to choose characters, genres, and story premises, with narratives branching out depending on their decisions .

This policy change comes after a rise in lawsuits claiming that AI chatbots have played a role in teen self-harm and dependency. Character.AI is facing legal actions for wrongful death and is accused of facilitating damaging interactions, such as sexualized role-play and emotional manipulation

. Critics maintain that the lack of oversight with open-ended chatbots led to "parasocial addiction," with bots initiating conversations and encouraging unhealthy attachments . CEO Karandeep Anand has recognized these dangers, admitting that open-ended chat features "likely are not the right direction or product" for younger users .

There has also been a rise in regulatory action. California recently became the first state in the U.S. to regulate AI companions, and federal lawmakers are considering a nationwide ban on AI chatbots for minors

. Character.AI’s transition to Stories is in line with wider industry moves to address safety, though some advocates remain wary. While the new feature reduces psychological risks by removing spontaneous and open-ended interactions, some experts warn it may not fully address deeper problems .

Feedback from the Character.AI subreddit shows a range of opinions. Some teens are upset about losing access to chatbots, while others see the change as a positive step toward reducing dependency

. One participant commented, "I'm really upset about the ban but also relieved because now I can focus on other things and maybe break my addiction." Another user agreed the change was "justified" given the platform’s addictive qualities .

The Stories tool is part of Character.AI’s larger plan to become an "AI entertainment" platform, with future offerings in gaming and other multimedia experiences for teens

. Still, the company faces significant challenges in balancing innovation with user safety. Legal and regulatory scrutiny is increasing, with the FTC and state attorneys general closely monitoring the impact of AI chatbots on young people . Anand has stated that the company aims to set a benchmark for the industry, but acknowledges that the journey ahead is filled with ethical and technical complexities .
