Polymarket: Probability of a hantavirus pandemic by 2026 drops to 7%, down 28% this week
The probability of the Polymarket prediction event "A hantavirus pandemic will occur in 2026" has currently dropped to 7%, falling by 28% this week.
The settlement criteria for this event are based on official communications from the World Health Organization. If the World Health Organization explicitly labels hantavirus, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), or a hantavirus-related outbreak as a "pandemic" in an official public statement before 11:59 PM Eastern Time on December 31, 2026, the market will be deemed "Yes"; otherwise, it will be determined as "No".
It is reported that Maria Van Kerkhove, acting director of the World Health Organization's Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness and Prevention division, stated that the current risk from hantavirus outbreaks to the public remains low. Personnel aboard the "Hondius" cruise ship where the hantavirus outbreak occurred are about to be evacuated. She recommended active monitoring and follow-up for all disembarked passengers and crew for a period of 42 days. Van Kerkhove said at a hantavirus discussion meeting that the 42-day monitoring period should start from their last contact with a confirmed or suspected hantavirus infection case.

The earnings yield of stocks, as measured by the inverse of the S&P 500’s price-to-earnings ratio, is now lower than the 10-year US Treasury yield, resulting in a clear yield suppression effect on the stock market from bonds. According to the Shiller model, the S&P 500 may outperform bonds by only about 1% annually over the next decade. The 20-year paradigm of stocks outperforming bonds has officially come to an end.
