Musk expands use of Grok in efficiency department, raising privacy concerns
according to three informed sources, Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team is expanding the use of his artificial intelligence chatbot Grok to analyze data within the U.S. federal government, which may violate conflict of interest laws and put sensitive information of millions of Americans at risk. This use of Grok could exacerbate concerns of privacy advocates and others, as Musk's Department of Government Efficiency team seems to be abandoning long-standing protections for sensitive data handling as Trump reshapes U.S. bureaucratic agencies. One of the three informed sources familiar with DOGE's activities said Musk's team is using a customized version of the Grok chatbot. This source said that this move is clearly aimed at helping DOGE more effectively filter data. "They ask questions, have it prepare reports, and provide data analysis." The second and third informed sources said that while Grok has not yet been approved internally within the Department of Homeland Security, DOGE staff have also informed DHS officials of its use.
