Norwegian Fund Increases Bitcoin Equity Holdings by 83% in 2025

Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global increased its Bitcoin-related holdings by 83% in Q2 2025 through equities in MicroStrategy and Metaplanet, according to Standard Chartered research.

The significant increase signals shifting risk appetites among institutional investors, potentially influencing broader market movements and sparking interest in Bitcoin from other global financial institutions.

Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global, the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, increased its Bitcoin-related holdings by 83% in the second quarter of 2025. The investment is mainly through equity positions in MicroStrategy and Metaplanet, according to regulatory filings .

Norges Bank Investment Management, the fund’s operator, focuses on a conservative institutional strategy. NBIM raised its Bitcoin-equivalent exposure from 6,200 BTC to 11,400 BTC, signaling a shift in institutional strategy toward more risk-tolerant positions in Bitcoin equities.

This strategic move reflected increased Bitcoin equities investment by the Norwegian fund but did not significantly impact Ethereum or other altcoins. The gain in Bitcoin exposure through MicroStrategy marked a significant change in large-scale investment patterns.

While direct Sovereign wallet holdings remain unreported, the move coincided with increased investor interest in Bitcoin spot ETFs and crypto-related stocks. Despite limited immediate market impact, this lays groundwork for potential industry trend adaptation.

The investment is seen as a benchmark for other global pension funds, indicating potential FOMO among sovereign investors. Further detailed regulatory filings support this trend, as evidenced by the increase in institutional crypto stocks.

Historically, such investments tend to align with BTC momentum, affecting related equities. While wider crypto markets benefited less, the current trend could revitalize institutional strategies in the digital asset sector, with precedence from previous major U.S. institutional shifts.

“Norges Bank Investment Management’s 83% increase in Bitcoin-related holdings signals a marked shift in institutional risk appetite.” — Geoffrey Kendrick, Global Head, Digital Asset Research, Standard Chartered Bank
