US Employment Data Signals Economic Weakness

The American labor market is showing signs of instability, with nonfarm payrolls decreasing by 92,000 during February, prior to the onset of conflict in Iran. This figure came in lower than any forecast, though Scotia—ranked number one—provided the most accurate prediction, having previously cautioned that risks were skewed to the downside. Additionally, previous job numbers were revised downward by 69,000 positions. The muted activity on Trump’s social media ahead of the report now appears more understandable. Following the release, the yield on the US 2-year Treasury note dropped by approximately 5 to 6 basis points, reflecting a bull steepening trend, while the S&P 500 index declined by 1.75% in early trading. Further market movement is possible as investors digest the news.

Altman went further, announcing that OpenAI will not IPO this year. The resignation of a researcher and a collective breakout of uncontrollable AI systems have ignited long-standing industry fears.
