Canada's current account surplus in the second quarter was more than double economists' expectations, as crude oil and bitumen exports surged to record levels, providing the country with a trade buffer amid escalating tariff disputes with the United States. Data released by Statistics Canada on Thursday showed Canada's current account surplus in the second quarter reached 8.84 billion CAD (6.4 billion USD), the largest surplus since 2005 and the fourth-largest current account surplus since data became available in 1981. The first quarter deficit was revised to 8.31 billion CAD. Previously, economists expected a second-quarter current account surplus of 3.9 billion CAD. The shift from deficit to surplus in the current account was mainly driven by goods exports, particularly energy products. Boosted by the surge in global oil prices caused by the Iran war, Canadian energy product exports grew by 27.4% in the second quarter. Inflows into Canadian government bonds also hit a record, with foreign investors increasing their holdings of Canadian government bonds by 80.8 billion CAD.
