⑴ The head of the United Nations International Maritime Organization stated that there are currently about 6,000 seafarers stranded on approximately 400 ships in the Persian Gulf, unable to safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz and leave the area. The prolonged closure of the strait is causing an ongoing accumulation of impacts on international shipping and humanitarian conditions.⑵ The scale of stranded ships and seafarers reflects the profound disruption of the global shipping chain caused by the Hormuz deadlock. This not only affects energy transportation but also involves systemic interruptions in crew rotations, supplies, and vessel turnaround.⑶ The stranded seafarers are facing both physical and psychological stress, with difficulties in crew changes and growing issues of contract overruns becoming increasingly prominent. Concerns within the international shipping community over the escalation of the humanitarian crisis are intensifying.⑷ This data provides a new quantitative dimension for assessing the actual impact of the Hormuz blockade. Previously, market attention was mostly focused on crude oil flows and prices, while the stranded costs of maritime human capital have yet to be fully priced in.⑸ If the deadlock persists, shipping insurance and crew employment costs will rise further. Shipowners may be forced to adjust routes or bear additional risks, and these costs will eventually be passed on to global trade and energy prices.
