Lululemon founder Chip Wilson and his wife Summer Wilson have announced their divorce. The couple does not have a prenuptial agreement. Chip holds about 8.6% of Lululemon shares, valued at nearly $1 billion. The potential shareholding changes due to the divorce have drawn market attention amid a sharp decline in the stock price. Additionally, Chip also owns approximately 18% of Amer Sports, with a market value close to $3 billion.

Lululemon Athletica founder and billionaire Chip Wilson and his wife of over 20 years, Summer Wilson, have announced their divorce. As the couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement, the division of their vast assets remains unclear, and the market is closely monitoring the potential changes in equity holdings stemming from this development.

According to Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, the couple has notified friends about their separation. Legal proceedings were filed in April this year at the Supreme Court of British Columbia, but the case details are not open to the public or media.

The divorce comes at a time when Lululemon is facing multiple pressures. On Friday, the company's share price plunged over 17% after it lowered its full-year sales outlook, with shares now hovering near the lowest level in almost eight years. Former Nike executive Heidi O'Neill is set to assume the role of CEO on September 8.

Both Chip and Summer Wilson stepped down from Lululemon’s management team over a decade ago, but as founder and a major shareholder, Chip Wilson has continued to actively influence the company’s direction.

Previously, Chip Wilson publicly launched a proxy battle seeking governance reforms. More recently, the two sides reached a settlement agreement that granted him a seat nomination on the company’s board in exchange for his commitment not to publicly criticize the company for about 18 months.

Uncertainty over equity division as no prenuptial agreement exists

Chip Wilson is 71 years old and, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, his personal fortune is estimated at around $6.1 billion.

Regarding Lululemon equity, recent securities filings indicate he holds about 8.6% of the company's shares through various entities, valued at nearly $1 billion; Summer Wilson holds about 1% of shares, valued at roughly $100 million.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the couple did not have a prenuptial agreement, and the ultimate impact on the family assets has yet to be determined. This means the ownership of the above-mentioned shares and other assets awaits clarification through legal proceedings, and any potential changes to the equity structure may have a certain impact on the market.

Vast asset portfolio with nearly $3 billion stake in Amer Sports

In addition to Lululemon, Chip Wilson has a substantial asset portfolio. He owns approximately 18% of Finland’s Amer Sports, a stake valued at nearly $3 billion. Amer Sports owns multiple apparel brands, including Vancouver-based Arc'teryx.

He also owns significant real estate assets, including one of the most valuable homes in British Columbia. Currently, he is investing part of his wealth into research for treating a form of muscular dystrophy that affects him, and he is also occasionally involved in regional political issues.

Longtime philanthropic partners and family office co-founders

In recent years, Chip and Summer Wilson have donated CA$134 million (approximately $97 million) through their family office, House of Wilson, to the BC Parks Foundation, which the charity described as the largest private donation in Canadian conservation history.

Both are listed as co-founders of the family office. In 2024, the city of Vancouver designated October 3 each year as “Summer and Chip Wilson Day” in their honor.

Summer Wilson, aged 52, was Lululemon’s founding chief designer and played a vital role in the company’s early development.
