The yield on the US 10-year Treasury has surged above 4.8%, rapidly approaching the critical “life-or-death line” at 5%. If it holds above this level, it will officially break out of its long-term fluctuating range, with almost no resistance above. Soaring oil prices and rising agricultural products continue to fuel inflation expectations. The VIX has awakened suddenly, and institutions are scrambling to buy tail risk protection. While the AI narrative underpins the resilience of tech stocks, the 35% short accumulation in the Nasdaq could trigger a short squeeze at any time.

The U.S. bond market is issuing increasingly hard-to-ignore warnings. The 10-year Treasury yield is approaching the critical 5% threshold, as an explosive surge in oil prices pushes up inflation expectations, agricultural product prices are climbing simultaneously, and volatility indicators are awakening—a combination of pressures that is transforming the market's worst-case “nightmare scenario” from hypothesis into reality.

The 10-year Treasury yield has clearly breached the 4.8% resistance level, with the market now laser-focused on the psychological 5% milestone. Should the closing price stabilize above 5%, yields will leave their multi-year trading range, with almost no effective resistance above that level.

Meanwhile, the VIX Index has seen a significant rise this week, and tail risk pricing in the options market is being aggressively reassessed. Demand for low-delta protection has soared, and skew has sharply increased.

However, this situation is not simply one-sidedly bearish. Historically, the tech stock bubble has often suppressed the negative influence of rising interest rates. Since mid-June, Nasdaq short positions have grown about 35%, and institutional investors overall remain cautious and on the sidelines—which means that if sentiment reverses, a short squeeze scenario cannot be discounted.

Yields Nearing 5%, Bond Market Warning Hard to Ignore

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield has decisively broken through the 4.8% resistance and is steadily advancing toward the milestone 5% level. The market generally considers 5% to be a crucial dividing line—once the closing price breaks through and stabilizes at this level, the yield will officially exit the multi-year volatile range, lacking obvious technical support above, and making further upside difficult to predict.

The forces driving yields higher are not limited to the bond market itself. The explosive rally in oil prices is directly feeding through to rates, and the market is now discussing the possibility of oil surging to $120. Meanwhile, the Bloomberg Commodity Agriculture Index (BCOM Agriculture Index) is rising in step with long-term yields. Historical data show that significant moves in agricultural prices and interest rates often accompany each other. If food prices take another leap, overall inflation pressure will further intensify, leaving central banks with even less room to turn dovish.

Data from Goldman Sachs (GS) suggests that as rates continue their ascent, the pressure on the stock market will progressively manifest. Current rate levels are now in an area that has historically dealt a substantial blow to equity valuations.

VIX Awakens, Tail Risk Pricing Rapidly Reassessed

Changes in the volatility market warrant particular attention. This week, the VIX Index has moved sharply higher, exhibiting signs of “overshooting” relative to the S&P 500—the equity index itself has not yet experienced panic selling, but the options market’s tail risk pricing is already responding, with a spike in demand for low-delta protection and a sharp rise in skew, signaling that institutional investors are actively buying insurance against extreme downside scenarios.

Goldman Sachs analyst Garrett’s model quantifies this risk further. The model compares the VIX (inverted) with CTA strategy technical threshold breakouts, and shows that the current extent of technical deterioration matches periods when VIX reached around 25 in the past, while VIX is currently near 18. This suggests that if technical pressures persist, volatility has considerable room for further upside.

Previously, the market was distinctly complacent. Cross-asset pricing was riddled with contradictions—stocks barely moved, volatility once dropped to lows, while rate and inflation risks kept mounting. With the onset of autumn’s seasonally volatile window, this contradiction is now being quickly corrected.

Tech Stock Resilience and Short Position Buildup Intensify Bull-Bear Tug of War

Besides the above risk factors, the market also contains unignorable hedging forces. Historical precedent shows that tech stock bubbles can counteract the negative effects of rising rates. From the late 1990s internet bubble as an example, the Nasdaq surged by over 200% during a 200 basis-point increase in 30-year Treasury yields, and gained over 100% during a 100 basis-point Fed rate hike. Since the launch of ChatGPT, the Nasdaq 100 (NDX) has also risen in tandem with 30-year Treasury yields, suggesting that this historical pattern may remain valid as the AI narrative continues to drive markets.

Meanwhile, the buildup of short positions itself acts as a potential upside catalyst. According to Goldman Sachs data, NDX short positions have increased by about 35% since mid-June.

On the institutional sentiment front, Goldman Sachs' John Flood recently returned from an Asia roadshow, noting surprise at the level of caution toward AI and the broader market. July’s momentum crash left a distinct psychological scar, with some Asian hedge funds giving back over 20% of their year-to-date gains as a result. Geopolitics, rates, and inflation dominate client conversations, with positioning and sentiment at subdued levels.

Flood believes that the upcoming IPO boom could act as a catalyst to attract both institutions and retail investors back into risk assets. Light positioning, deep skepticism, and potential catalysts coexist—in this combination, the direction of the “pain trade” still points to the upside.
