Sector Update: Financial Stocks Decline Thursday Afternoon

02:10 PM EDT, 10/01/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Financial stocks were lower in Thursday afternoon trading, with the NYSE Financial Index falling 0.7% and the State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) off 0.2%. The Philadelphia Housing Index was easing 0.1%, and the State Street Real Estate Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLRE) was shedding 0.6%. Bitcoin (BTC-USD) was rising 1.4% to $84,680, and the yield for 10-year US Treasuries was falling 7 basis points to 5.22%. In economic news, the Institute for Supply Management's US manufacturing index fell to 54.5 in September from 54.6 in August, compared with expectations for an increase to 55.0 in a Bloomberg-compiled survey. The S&P Global US manufacturing index for September was revised to 55.9 from a flash reading of 57.0, compared with expectations for no revision in a Bloomberg poll. Employers in the US announced 43,281 layoffs in September, down 18% from the month prior and 20% year over year, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Initial jobless claims fell sequentially to 197,000 in the week ended Sept. 26 from an upwardly revised 198,000 in the previous week, according to the US Labor Department. In sector news, Kalshi is finalizing a new financing round that would value the prediction market platform at around $40 billion, Bloomberg reported. In corporate news, Blackstone (BX) said it has launched defense technology firm Falcata through the acquisition and combination of TSC and Applied Systems Engineering. Shares were up 0.7%. UBS (UBS) pushed back against a call from major shareholder Artisan Partners to consider moving its headquarters outside Switzerland, the Financial Times reported. Shares fell 1.8%. Bank of America's (BAC) Merrill Lynch unit agreed to pay $39 million to resolve claims that it left retirement account customers earning extremely low interest on cash holdings, Reuters reported. Shares were shedding 1.2%.

BUZZ-TD Cowen lowers its target price for UnitedHealth Group ahead of third-quarter earnings release

On October 9, TD Cowen lowered its price target for UnitedHealth Group (UNH.N) from $430 to $402 ahead of the company's third-quarter earnings report on October 13. The brokerage stated that the widely expected third-quarter medical cost ratio of 89.9% and earnings per share of $4.12 are "well within reach." The report pointed out that recently announced Medicare star ratings have fallen as anticipated, which is expected to create a $1.5 billion revenue headwind in 2028. The new price target represents a 6.9% upside from the stock's previous closing price. "We also expect management to comment on preliminary expectations for 2027 Medicare Advantage (MA) enrollment growth and may emphasize a focus on margins over enrollment growth," the brokerage added. Earnings forecasts remain unchanged, but a lowered valuation multiple led to the reduction in price target. Among 29 brokerages, 23 rate the stock a "buy" or higher, while 6 rate it "hold"; the median price target is $483.82, according to LSEG data. As of the previous close, the stock is up 12.3% year-to-date.

BUZZ - Brokerage opinion: Pepsi's growth strategy in the US still needs adjustment

October 9 - Snack and soft drink giant PepsiCo (PEP.O) warned on Thursday that the recovery of growth and profit margins in its key North American market will take longer than planned, and stated it will implement further cost-cutting measures to offset weak demand for its snacks and beverages. Twenty-five analysts have given the stock an average rating of "Hold," with a median target price of $145, according to data compiled by LSEG. JPMorgan (rating: "Neutral," target price: $137) pointed out that the company remains strong in international markets, but demand for snacks and beverages in North America remains weak, with limited signs of near-term improvement. Deutsche Bank (rating: "Hold," target price: $132) noted that PepsiCo's North American Beverages (PBNA) segment continues to lag the competition, with weak profit margins. Although the company plans to strengthen brand investment and execution, the path to sustained improvement remains unclear. Piper Sandler ("Overweight," target price: $140) indicated that the company faces weak U.S. demand and cost pressures. While new protein and hydration products may support growth, such prospects have yet to be validated. RBC Capital Markets ("Sector Perform," target price: $150) highlighted that North American beverages remain the main drag, while franchise re-authorization could support longer-term growth.
