Delivery soared by 85% but failed to prevent the death cross; Rivian (RIVN.US) dilution risk sparks panic

Despite the R2 model driving an 85% year-on-year increase in deliveries, Rivian's stock price continues to decline due to technical death cross, high short interest, and risks of equity dilution, facing a severe market test.

According to Woofun AI, there is a sharp divergence between Rivian (RIVN.US)'s strong fundamentals and its weak stock price. Despite a surge in sales for the R2 model, the share price remains under pressure due to a technical death cross pattern.

Explosive growth in delivery figures has become the key variable supporting the company's fundamentals. During the quarter, 19,751 vehicles were produced with total deliveries reaching 19,248 units, soaring 85% year-on-year. The company reaffirmed its full-year delivery target of 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles, significantly exceeding last year's total of 42,247, mainly owing to strong market acceptance of the R2 model. In comparison, Tesla (TSLA.US) produced 464,391 vehicles and delivered 486,532 vehicles for the quarter, achieving only modest growth. Rivian (RIVN.US) expects first-year R2 sales to surpass 25,000 units, making it one of the fastest-selling new electric vehicle models in the US market.

Data compiled by Woofun AI shows revenue expectations have been substantially raised, with third-quarter revenue projected to reach $2 billion (up 28% year-on-year), while forward guidance points to $2.5 billion (up 93% year-on-year), underscoring a robust growth momentum.

However, technical headwinds are dampening market sentiment. The share price has fallen to its lowest level since March this year, with the 50-day moving average forming a bearish crossover with the 200-day average, establishing a death cross pattern that could see further downside to the May low of $12.66. TradingView charts confirm this trend. A high short-interest ratio is exacerbating downward pressure, with Benzinga data showing a short interest of 10.7%, reflecting investors’ pessimism about future movements.

This stark contrast between technical weakness and fundamental strength has significantly heightened stock price volatility risk.

The deeper risk lies in the erosion of shareholder equity from equity dilution. Shares outstanding have soared from 892 million in 2022 to 1.36 billion, with dilution effects noticeable. In July, the company again sold 86.25 million shares worth $1.7 billion, continuing its pace of stock sales.

Although this ongoing capital activity alleviates short-term funding pressures, it weakens per-share value in the long term. This is a structural challenge Rivian (RIVN.US) must face under survival pressure following multiple rounds of financing, and investors should be wary of the lasting drag from dilution risk on its valuation.
