Up 20% in October, funds bet on another 30% surge! "Self-destructing" Snap (SNAP.US) call options soar as specs push for $5 billion valuation

As of Monday during the U.S. stock market hours, Snap has risen by more than 20% this month, and its options trading volume has surged to over four times the monthly average. Of the approximately $5.5 million in total options premiums traded, about $5 million came from call options.

According to Zhihui Finance APP, Snap's stock price has rebounded sharply, attracting increased options activity. This surge is driven by a combination of core business improvements, expectations of independent financing for Specs, and the growth spillover from Meta’s Muse personal AI assistant, all of which are boosting Snap’s valuation.

On October 12, Snap (SNAP.US) closed up 4.82% at $6.53, achieving six consecutive gains. Compared to the sluggish price range in the first half of this year, this marks a significant rebound. As of Monday's U.S. stock market session, Snap has risen over 20% this month, with options trading volume rising to over four times the one-month average. Of the approximately $5.5 million in observed options premiums, around $5 million comes from call options. The most notable contracts are the calls expiring December 18 with a strike price of $8, seeing about 26,000 contracts traded at a premium of about $0.37 per share. Based on this, the breakeven at expiration is $8.37 per share, about 30% higher than the closing price that day.

These details reflect trading on a clear upward window: buyers pay the premium to gain exposure to further stock gains before year-end. The roughly 30% potential upside is the profit threshold at expiry derived from the option cost—not a consensus price target, nor a requirement to reach that level to sell for a profit before expiration.

Snap’s main business remains operating the Snapchat visual social platform, with core revenue from digital advertising and additional monetization through paid subscriptions like Snapchat+. The company's product line covers friend-based photo and video chatting, Stories (timed posts), Spotlight short-form video, AR filters, and Specs smart glasses. The "disappearing" message app remains Snap's flagship social media business feature, but it no longer fully encapsulates the company’s current scope. A more accurate depiction is that Snap attracts users with visual communication and social connections, earns income from ads and subscriptions, and explores new computing interfaces with Specs glasses and AI services.

Enabling Specs Independent Financing: Turning R&D Investments Into Recognizable Asset Value

This round of Snap’s stock surge is more directly catalyzed at the company level by shareholder Blue Duck Capital. On October 6, the fund publicly urged Snap to bring in external capital for Specs to help shoulder the estimated $500 million annual development cost and establish an independent valuation for the AR business. Blue Duck values Specs at about $5 billion and believes segment revaluation could push Snap’s share price to $12–14; it is important to note these figures are Blue Duck’s estimates and not completed financings or company guidance.

Specs is both Snap’s augmented reality (AR) glasses product and the business operated by its wholly owned subsidiary, Specs Inc. The ecosystem also includes SPECS Intelligence, a personal AI service aimed at understanding users' contexts and proactively assisting them across phones, computers, and glasses.

Thus, the most direct and bullish company-specific catalyst for Snap’s sharp stock and market cap rebound is undoubtedly Blue Duck’s push to introduce external capital for Specs, to help meet R&D funding needs, and unlock segment valuation through independent pricing. AI provides sentiment and growth expectations, especially as the recent global popularity of Meta AI constitutes a strong AI-driven optimism backdrop.

Cutting-edge AI is expected to expand Specs’ application and commercialization potential in the future, while the independent financing proposal makes that long-term vision a more concrete valuation driver. Options traders are betting this repricing continues to progress through year-end.

Product developments are also adding substance to this valuation conversation. On September 16, Snap launched SPECS Intelligence, framed as a cross-device personal AI service for iPhone, Mac, and AR glasses. By connecting with user-authorized apps, it understands schedules, goals, and contexts to offer proactive assistance; the full experience is currently by invitation only. From a business model perspective, cross-device services expand potential user reach, while AR glasses can extend information and action prompts into real-world scenarios, opening revenue streams beyond advertising for Snap.

Earnings Become a Key Turning Point: Can Cash Flow Support Valuation Repricing?

The core argument behind shareholder Blue Duck Capital’s public call for Snap to enable external financing for Specs is to change how capital markets view Snap.

When advertising and subscription businesses have to absorb long-term hardware R&D expenditure, investors see persistently depressed profitability. If Specs gets outside funding and independent pricing, it becomes easier for the market to separately assess the cash generation ability of mature businesses and the long-term growth value of the AR platform. Financing can ease funding needs, but if Specs remains consolidated in Snap’s accounts, its R&D expenses won’t disappear automatically.

Snap’s operational recovery already has financial foundation. In Q2 2026, revenue reached $1.599 billion, up 19% year-over-year; adjusted EBITDA was about $250 million while free cash flow was about $121 million, up 505% and 407% respectively from the prior year; GAAP net loss narrowed to $164 million, and monthly active users reached 971 million.

This operating data means the bullish investment thesis now has two separate verifiable pillars—advertising and subscription drive revenue and cash flow improvements, while Specs offers potential for standalone asset valuation and incremental AI business. The former determines the base for profit recovery, the latter affects how much growth premium the market is willing to grant.

The next major checkpoint is the Q3 earnings call on November 4, 5:00 PM Eastern/November 5, 6:00 AM Beijing time. The popular December expiry options cover this results window, so the current bullish trade may be seen as a combined bet on “continued earnings improvement, progress on capital allocation, and further valuation repair.” What will truly drive expectations to materialize is sustained translation of revenue growth to per-share cash flow, alongside Specs financing arrangements providing a credible reference for value.

This wave of the AI boom exhibits dual characteristics: On a micro level, the heavy-asset nature of AI data centers is driving the industry toward "real estate-like" debt financing models, such as corporate bonds, private credit, and computing power ABS. On a macro level, nearly $2 trillion in overseas excess savings is flowing into core AI assets in the U.S. stock market through private institutions, reconstructing a transnational capital cycle reminiscent of the period before the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis. With nearly $3 trillion in off-balance sheet debt and rising interest rates, the industry is facing an impending major liquidity test.
