Polkadot (DOT) experienced a drop of around 5% on October 17, reversing much of its recent recovery as intensified selling activity weighed on the broader altcoin market. The move erased gains that followed a brief rally earlier in the month.
Polkadot falls 5% despite new 2.1 billion DOT supply cap and reduced issuance
Market reversal follows weak altcoin sentiment
The price of DOT hovered between $1.16 and $1.18 after reaching as high as $1.29 on October 10. This pullback reversed a portion of the double-digit rally that began on October 9, when the token traded near $1.09 before climbing back to $1.24. The bullish momentum continued through October 10, but failed to hold above the $1.20 level over subsequent trading sessions.
On October 12, selling pressure accelerated, causing DOT to fall roughly 7% and close near $1.17. Although the cryptocurrency briefly recovered on October 16, it struggled to maintain gains and slipped below $1.20 by the following day.
Analysts attributed DOT’s reversal to overall bearishness among altcoins, with smaller tokens broadly declining as investors trimmed exposure to speculative digital assets. There was no discrete event unique to Polkadot cited as a catalyst for the recent declines.
Tokenomics overhaul and its effects
The latest price action comes just after significant updates to Polkadot’s tokenomics, which introduced a maximum supply cap of 2.1 billion DOT and a revised issuance schedule limiting the production of new tokens over time. The first such reduction took place on March 14, 2026, lowering the rate at which new DOT enter circulation. Going forward, issuance will be reduced every two years, further slowing supply expansion.
Polkadot, a blockchain platform designed to enable interoperability among different networks, recently sought to curb inflation by introducing these supply controls. A prior governance proposal restructured the ecosystem’s inflationary model, aiming to strengthen the platform’s long-term value proposition for holders.

While lower issuance is intended to reduce dilution for existing holders, the effects of this change depend on broader market dynamics. If selling by current token holders outpaces demand from new investors, prices can continue falling even as supply growth slows.

| Issuance reduction | No scheduled decrease | Reduced every 2 years |
| Inflation model | Inflationary | Deflationary trend |
Investor behavior remains influential
Despite these fundamental adjustments, improving token economics alone did not halt DOT’s recent decline. Short-term price trends remain heavily influenced by trader sentiment, liquidity, and general appetite for risk within the altcoin sector.
Short-term momentum has faded for Polkadot, and profit-taking has increased following the recent rally, limiting the immediate impact of its new supply controls.
Lower supply growth does not guarantee stronger prices, especially in periods when demand for altcoins is subdued. DOT’s struggles reflect this dynamic, signaling the importance of market conditions beyond supply-side changes.
Complementing its tokenomics overhaul, Polkadot has advanced upgrades to its staking incentives and network infrastructure, aiming to foster long-term network health and broader adoption.
