EQT AB is engaged in advanced negotiations to acquire the European molecular diagnostics company Qiagen (QGEN.US), and has submitted a binding offer at over $50 per share.

Zhitong Finance APP has learned from informed sources that Swedish private equity firm EQT AB is in advanced talks to acquire European molecular diagnostics company Qiagen (QGEN.US) and has submitted a binding offer exceeding $50 per share. Sources also said that another private equity giant, KKR, is also participating in the bidding.

Driven by acquisition news, Qiagen’s US shares rose as much as 9.2% on Tuesday. The stock ultimately closed up 5.05% at $48.90, giving the company a market capitalization of over $10 billion. Qiagen is also listed in Frankfurt.

Sources stated that Qiagen’s board of directors will meet this week to make a decision on the potential deal. However, it remains uncertain whether the discussions will ultimately lead to Qiagen’s sale to EQT or another company. Representatives for Qiagen, EQT, and KKR all declined to comment.

If this acquisition is completed, it will become one of Europe’s largest healthcare deals this year and may also end years of takeover speculation surrounding Qiagen. Reports in January indicated that Qiagen was evaluating strategic options.
