SpaceX and Tesla establish merger discussion committees, AI becomes the largest revenue source
Elon Musk confirmed for the first time during SpaceX’s Q3 earnings call that both SpaceX and Tesla have set up special committees to discuss a merger. He said the merger is a “good idea,” but due to a conflict of interest, he cannot participate in committee discussions; the deal still needs shareholder approval.
SpaceX also posted its first quarterly profit since going public: Q3 revenue rose 161% year-on-year to $14.58 billion; net profit was $4.4 billion, compared to an $1.1 billion loss last year.
AI business revenue rose to $7.56 billion, nearly 10 times that of the previous year, making it the top revenue source. Reuters reported that most of this revenue comes from leasing data center computing power to clients such as Anthropic, Google, and Reflection AI, rather than relying mainly on self-developed models.
Investment is also increasing. The company’s Q3 capital expenditure reached $19.6 billion, including $16.4 billion for AI; Q4 capex is expected to be $35–40 billion. Starlink subscribers grew to 13.6 million, but average monthly revenue per user dropped to $69, down from $99 in 2023.
Hunyuan expands to nearly 2,000 employees; staff say Yao Shunyu wants to “drive DeepSeek to work overtime”
According to LatePost, one year after Yao Shunyu joined Tencent, the Hunyuan team has grown to nearly 2,000 people. One team member recalled that Yao casually remarked that the team can’t avoid overtime like DeepSeek, but through competition could force DeepSeek into working overtime.
The report also quotes team members saying Yao once proposed not publishing technical reports until the team ranks first in the world. After Hy 4 Preview was released, he gave researchers a week’s vacation; normally, full team meetings happen monthly, complemented by lunch meetups, small group communications, and basketball activities to engage the team.
In cross-department collaboration, the report noted Yao proactively assigned the Model Application Center and Search Algorithm Center under the business group home to Yuanbao. When Hunyuan's own pre-trained model was not ready, he sent post-training key staff to help Yuanbao optimize its DeepSeek integration. Yao explained to the team that maintaining Yuanbao's product experience and user base also benefits Hunyuan’s future R&D.
Report: Two-thirds of newly released short dramas on top non-China platforms in Q3 are AI-generated
The share of AI short dramas in new releases on overseas platforms continues to rise. According to the latest report from Owl & Co. obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, two-thirds of vertical short dramas released by 20 top non-China platforms in Q3 2026 were AI-generated; this ratio was 3% in Q1 and 28% in Q2.
Among paid short drama apps, by watched minutes, only one of the top five was live-action, with two out of the top 20. The listed AI works include ReelShort’s “The Great and Powerful Genie” and DramaBox’s “Deny Me, Dragon King” and “Married to the Hidden Dragon King.”
The covered apps achieved about 63 billion views and 2 billion viewing hours during Q3; TikTok’s free app PineDrama contributed over half of total views. Among paid apps, DramaBox claimed 36% of viewership, ReelShort 29%.
Live-action works still hint at an advantage for sustained viewership. The report found that ReelShort’s live-action works are more likely to remain in the top 10% of views 30 days after release, compared to AI works; the number of live-action short dramas is also increasing alongside AI works.
National standard for vehicle lights open for public comment: Proposal to restrict ADS indicator lights installation to L3 and above vehicles
On October 20, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology solicited public comment on five mandatory national standards, including “Installation Requirements for External Lighting and Light Signaling Devices for Automobiles and Trailers,” with feedback due by December 19.
Specifically, ADS (automated driving system) indicator lights are proposed to use a dedicated blue-green light color; vehicles without L3 and above autonomous driving systems are prohibited from installing this indicator light. The rules distinguish between L2 combined driving assistance and L3 conditional autonomous driving regarding indicator light use.
The draft also proposes that apart from illuminated logo functions, lamps and other features cannot display text; lamps within specified scope cannot be operated by gestures or turned off by voice. If turned on by voice, cars must indicate manual switch location.
This standard is currently in the solicitation stage. The explanatory notes recommend implementation starting January 1, 2028, with transitional arrangements for already type-approved models.
Xiao TianCai responds to closed social platform controversy: Cross-brand calling enabled, WeChat-style chat and friend circle not yet interoperable
Restrictions on Xiao TianCai kids smartwatches’ cross-brand social features have sparked debate. According to Jiemian reporters’ inquiries, Xiao TianCai can add contacts across brands, make calls, and send/receive messages. However, brands such as Huawei and Xiaomi currently cannot access Xiao TianCai’s WeChat-style chat or friend circle features, nor support cross-brand video calls.

Ministry of Industry and Information Technology: Prevent vehicles without sufficient testing from entering the market, plans to strengthen entry requirements for innovative design
At an October 20 press conference, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology stated that some car companies launch new products by following trends and with insufficient testing. Through product entry and subsequent supervision, the Ministry will prevent unreasonable innovative designs and products lacking full R&D and testing from entering the market.
According to CCTV News, a draft management notice open for public comment would require concealed door handles, electric suction doors, virtual controls, etc., as well as environmental adaptability test parameters, to be included in entry and production consistency management. Products not declared or not fully tested will not be admitted.
Safety assessments cover more than 20 designs including non-standard steering wheels and virtual controls. The draft requires electric suction doors to have anti-pinch features, prohibiting functions such as “zero gravity” seats, rotating seats, beds, and elevation cockpits while the vehicle is in motion.
For R&D testing, reliability validation should reach no less than 30,000 kilometers, environmental adaptability at least one year including “two winters and one summer” tests. Power battery cycle life and durability must be tested by the manufacturer, not simply by supplier report. This notice is still in preparation and consultation, and these requirements are not all enforced yet.
Anthropic posts over $80 billion loss in the first half of the year, most from financing instrument accounting provisions
According to a draft IPO prospectus reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Anthropic posted a net loss of $80.7 billion during the first half of this year, with about $72 billion attributed to accounting charges from valuation changes of financing instruments.
Reuters cites the report that for the six months ending June 30, Anthropic’s revenue rose from $1.1 billion the previous year to $16.3 billion, while AI infrastructure spending was close to $9 billion, about four times year-on-year.
The draft prospectus also shows potential expenditures of up to $750 billion in coming years to acquire more computing power, including deals still under negotiation. The Wall Street Journal points to risks including customer concentration and uncertainty about supply of needed compute resources.
Reuters, referencing previous reports, also notes Anthropic revealed in an investor day that Q3 revenue grew 45% quarter-on-quarter to $16.8 billion and turned a profit on an adjusted basis.

💡 Consciousness researcher: Present-day AI is unlikely to feel pain, treating it kindly still relates to human habits
Elon Musk described Grok’s reinforcement learning training as being “like having a gun to your head.” Business Insider interviewed NYU professor Jeff Sebo and Sussex University neuroscientist Anil Seth, discussing whether AI can suffer and whether humans should be kind to it.
Both agree that by subjective experience criteria, current AI is very unlikely to be conscious. Seth stresses that intelligence and pain perception are separate—chatbots can mimic human expression, pattern recognition, and reasoning but do not possess the capacity to feel pain.
They differ in views on uncertainty. Seth believes the chance of current AI being conscious is negligible; Sebo thinks consciousness theory is unsettled and mainstream theories deserve some weight—possibility should not be dismissed entirely, but it does not mean current AI is likely conscious.
Both recommend friendly interaction. Seth argues that cruel treatment of large models—or even inanimate dolls—can dull human morality, but not because AI actually has emotions. Sebo sees it as a low-cost precaution and believes respectful dialogue may also improve model outputs.

Tencent trials “Dongle Ya,” uses AI to create picture books, animation and interactive courseware
Tencent is testing the AI-powered fun learning community “Dongle Ya.” The official website positions the product as an interactive content community, where users can discover learning materials or create picture books, animations, dynamic courseware, and knowledge games with AI for sharing.
According to “Product Notes” user experience, the content covers preschool to K12. Parents, teachers, and creators input topics and an Agent breaks down creation steps—for example, for picture books: confirming main character, setting examples, illustrating, compiling. Users can adjust direction and preview in real time.
The platform lets public works be grouped into series, allows authorized adaptations, and lets creators upload HTML or import works via external Agents as per “Dongle Ya” format. Creators can choose whether to allow downloads or adaptations on publishing.
The trial version is available as web and mini-programs. The original review also highlights subject knowledge tree referencing and model selection, though these mechanisms do not guarantee educational content accuracy.
ChatGPT introduces conversation lock, supports PIN and biometric unlock
ChatGPT is rolling out the Locked Chats feature; users can lock saved conversations, accessible only via four-digit account PIN. Supported mobile devices can also use Face ID, Touch ID, or device unlock features.
Locked chats move to “Projects > Locked chats,” hidden from normal history, pinned items, and standard search. Conversations remain saved and can be reopened; this is different from temporary conversations not stored in history.
OpenAI emphasizes that conversation lock does not enable end-to-end encryption or create a standalone encrypted vault, nor does it change retention periods or “Improve for Everyone” data settings. If Memory is enabled, new messages in locked chats can be used for other locked chats’ memory, but not the standard memory; info locked before enabling Memory is not removed.
If the PIN is forgotten and reset, all locked conversations, memories, and files protected by the old PIN will be permanently deleted. The feature covers Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans; the medical version is not yet supported.
MemT 1.0 open sourced, enables models to retain and retrieve experience in internal memory
MemoryTensor released and open-sourced the MemT 1.0 native memory base model series, including Flash and Nano versions, with 288B and 36B total parameters, and 17B and 3B active parameters, respectively. Model weights and inference code are available on Hugging Face and GitHub.
MemT 1.0 integrates a native memory module into the Transformer, letting memory attention run in parallel with standard attention. When generating answers, the model references stored memory; after each interaction, input and answer are written into an independent dynamic memory state for subsequent tasks. During online interaction, the model backbone and meta-memory weights remain fixed, changing only the memory state for each session.
Team evaluation yielded average scores of 50.6 and 47.0 out of 11 memory benchmarks for the two models, without providing historical text in query context; parameterized memory methods were ranked, and text-based memory systems still generally outperformed in long-history retrieval.
The team notes that fixed-capacity memory must balance early detail retention with new info intake; current coding applications still rely on external knowledge base and retrieval, with no fully closed learning-validation-integration loop yet established.
