Gold rebounds to $3,900 after hitting one-year low, trailing AI stock selloff

Gold prices bounced back on Monday, November 2, after reaching their lowest point in a year, supported by softer oil prices and renewed demand following a pronounced selloff in technology shares.

Volatility Spurs Forced Gold Sales

Spot gold advanced about 0.7% to $3,900 per ounce, with December U.S. gold futures also climbing 0.3% to near $3,909. The uptick followed a 3.5% decline on Friday, when bullion slipped below $3,900 for the first time since October 2025.

Gold has long been viewed as a safe-haven asset during episodes of financial turbulence. However, the relationship did not fully hold last week, as severe losses in technology stocks led some investors to liquidate gold positions to cover margin requirements or reduce risk exposure.

Commerzbank analysts pointed to forced selling and margin calls as key reasons behind the dramatic Friday drop, expecting gold and other precious metals to recover once short-term selling pressure softens.

Commerzbank identified liquidity-driven selling as a major factor behind the slump, adding that a rebound was likely as these pressures subsided.

The wave of selling coincided with a broader downturn in artificial intelligence and technology stocks throughout October, as top firms saw billions wiped from their market capitalization.

Growing doubts about the profitability of AI infrastructure spending contributed to investor anxiety. Intel shares, despite gains in their data-center business, fell nearly 29%, highlighting sector volatility.

The widespread retreat in technology equities intensified the pressure on gold, as investors looked for highly liquid assets to sell in order to meet sudden cash needs.

Precious Metals and Oil React to Market Turmoil

The reversal in gold did little to stem losses in other precious metals. Silver dropped roughly 6.5% on Friday, breaching the $50 threshold, while platinum and palladium also posted significant declines.

Gold’s recovery on November 2 was mirrored by a notable drop in crude oil prices. Brent crude slid more than 3%, settling close to $109 per barrel, down from over $117 at the end of October. Diplomatic efforts regarding Iran raised optimism over possible improvements in Middle East supply, reducing concerns about energy-driven inflation.

Lower energy costs may ease inflation expectations, which in turn could weaken the case for holding rates high. This dynamic matters for gold, which pays no interest, as falling bond yields often make bullion relatively more appealing.

The downward move in energy prices has potential implications for both inflation and the outlook for gold, as shifts in yield expectations can quickly change bullion’s appeal.

Nevertheless, Federal Reserve officials have indicated that additional monetary tightening remains possible, feeding caution about the durability of gold’s rebound. Earlier research from Morgan Stanley had marked $4,000 as a crucial support, but Friday’s sharp selloff showed even major institutional reference points can fail under severe liquidity stress.

Can Gold Sustain a Recovery?

Following its weakest October since 2008, gold’s latest move higher has done little to dispel concerns about volatility. The immediate technical challenge remains establishing a foothold above $3,900 and then attempting a move towards $3,950. A sustained breakout above $4,000 could signal renewed buyer confidence but may also act as resistance given recent selling pressure.

On the downside, the October 30 low near $3,870 serves as a key level, with further declines potentially opening the door to $3,800 if stress persists. Investors are also watching the upcoming November 3 U.S. midterm elections and the November 6 employment report, both of which may impact market direction and monetary policy expectations.

Recent gold rallies following weaker-than-anticipated employment data underline how fluctuations in interest-rate outlooks can quickly influence demand for bullion.
