This shareholder letter, which opens with "Airbnb returns to growth mode," has delivered on its promises: revenue growth reached its fastest pace in over three years, booking volume accelerated significantly compared to the previous quarter, the company announced a new $12 billion share buyback authorization and raised its full-year guidance. Boosted by these developments, the stock price surged nearly 12% in after-hours trading.

According to Zhitong Finance APP, Airbnb (ABNB.US) released its Q3 2026 financial results after the US stock market closed on Thursday. The shareholder letter, which began with "Airbnb Returns to Growth Mode," delivered on its promises: revenue growth reached its fastest pace in over three years, booking volume accelerated significantly compared to last quarter, the company announced a new $12 billion buyback authorization, and raised its full-year guidance. Driven by these results, the stock price surged nearly 12% in after-hours trading, far exceeding the approximately 7.5% volatility priced in by the options market.

Core Results: Revenue and Profit Both Beat Expectations

The financial report shows Airbnb achieved Q3 revenue of $4.87 billion, a 19% increase year-over-year (16% at constant currency), surpassing market expectations of $4.75 billion and marking the company's fastest revenue growth in more than three years. Gross Booking Value (GBV) reached $27.7 billion, up 21% year-over-year and 5 percentage points faster than the previous quarter. Nights and Experiences Booked totaled 155 million, a 16% increase year-over-year—significantly accelerating from 10% in Q2 and 9% in the same period last year.

Profitability was also strong: net profit was $1.89 billion, a 38% increase year-over-year, with a net margin of 39%. Diluted EPS was $3.16, beating market expectations of $2.85 (compared to $2.21 in the same period last year). It should be noted that last year's results included a $213 million deferred income tax valuation allowance, which slightly distorts the EPS comparison base, but the acceleration in revenue and booking volume are the cleaner signals this quarter. Adjusted EBITDA was $2.51 billion, up 22% year-over-year, with a margin of 52%. Free cash flow was $1.43 billion (29% margin), and cumulative free cash flow over the past twelve months reached $4.9 billion.

Global Demand Resonance: All Five Core Markets Accelerate

The biggest highlight this quarter was the breadth of growth: the five core markets—United States, France, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia—all saw accelerated year-over-year growth. Regionally, nights and experiences booked in North America achieved low double-digit growth—the fastest in four years, with inbound tourism to the US showing improvement; EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa) delivered mid-teens growth, with the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy all seeing quarter-over-quarter acceleration; Latin America grew by more than 20%, with Brazil's origin net nights continuing to grow by over 30%.

On the product and operations front, mobile app nights booked increased 29% year-over-year, accounting for 66% of total bookings; the growth rate of first-time bookers accelerated to 13%, the highest since early 2022. The "Request Now, Pay Later" (RNPL) feature extended booking lead times. In terms of efficiency, about 40% of customer support issues were resolved without human intervention (about one-third in Q2), and per-booking customer service cost dropped by over 17% year-over-year.

$12 Billion Buyback + Raised Full-Year Guidance

Capital return ramped up significantly: the company repurchased $700 million of Class A shares this quarter and announced an additional buyback authorization of up to $12 billion—combined with the remaining $2.7 billion from previous authorizations, total "ammunition" nears $15 billion. As of quarter-end, the company held $12.65 billion in cash and short-term investments, and on October 30 entered into a new $1 billion, five-year unsecured revolving credit facility.

For guidance, the company expects Q4 revenue of $3.22–3.28 billion, up 16% to 18% year-over-year (including about 2 percentage points currency tailwind), with GBV growing in the mid-teens. The full-year revenue growth guidance was raised from "at least mid-teens" to "high teens," and the adjusted full-year EBITDA margin is expected to be around 36%.

It is worth noting that while peers such as Booking Holdings gave cautious Q4 guidance due to Middle East conflicts, Airbnb clearly stated that global travel demand "remains healthy," only indicating it is closely monitoring dynamics in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. This relatively optimistic outlook, combined with better-than-expected results and the largest share buyback authorization in history, jointly propelled the share price in after-hours trading from a closing price of $170.13 to nearly $190, a gain of about 11.8%.
