Vitalik: Ethereum's L1 and L2 need to clearly define the scope of transactions, avoiding extremes like "all in L2" or "all in L1"
In a message from ChainCatcher, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin responded to the question of whether "rollups are overall good or parasitic for Ethereum, and does ETH really need these L2s". He stated that Ethereum currently adopts a hybrid L1 + L2 expansion solution, but it still needs to clearly define the transaction scope of each layer.
Vitalik indicated that transferring all transactions to L2 could weaken ETH's position as an exchange medium and value storage, and cross-L2 operations still rely on L1. At the same time, keeping all transactions in L1 is also not feasible because it may lead to centralization and cannot meet the ever-increasing demand for on-chain transactions. It is necessary to find an appropriate balance between these two extremes to provide users with the best solution.
