The British Museum Places German Artist Dürer's "Rhinoceros" Sculpture on the Bitcoin Blockchain
PANews reported on May 15, according to Decrypt, that the British Museum has collaborated with Asprey Studio to reinterpret the 1515 masterpiece "Rhinoceros" by German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer into 11 pure silver sculptures. Each sculpture will be sold together with a digital inscription on the Bitcoin blockchain, using inscription technology to ensure traceability of the artwork's provenance. Asprey Studio's Chief Creative Officer Ali Walker stated that buyers will first receive a digital inscription certificate, and the pure silver sculptures will take several months to custom complete. The 40 cm high solid silver sculptures are complex to produce, requiring the digital model to be divided and then welded into shape, a process that only a few craftsmen in the UK can accomplish.
Dürer, a pioneer of the German Renaissance, created the "Rhinoceros" print without ever seeing a real rhinoceros, relying solely on textual descriptions. Walker believes that if Dürer were alive today, he would be well-suited to the digital authentication methods of the modern art world. The British Museum has previously issued NFTs of artists like Katsushika Hokusai through LaCollection and collaborated with The Sandbox to develop metaverse experiences. The digital inscriptions in this collaboration do not NFT the original work but create blockchain documentation for the silver sculptures. The original sketch remains in the collection of the British Museum.
