The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund downplayed the decline of the US dollar over the past year, stating that the dollar is likely to maintain its dominant position.

“We should not be swayed by short-term fluctuations in exchange rates,” IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said in an interview on Monday. “I do not think the role of the dollar will change in the short term.”

She pointed out that people “should think deeply about why the dollar can play such an important role in the international monetary system,” citing “the depth and liquidity of the US capital markets, the scale of the economy, and America's entrepreneurial spirit.”

Georgieva spoke at the IMF Emerging Markets Conference held in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, reaffirming the views she has expressed over the past year.

The US Dollar Index fell 8.1% last year, marking the largest decline since 2017. So far this year, the index has dropped another 1.3%, with tariffs imposed by the Trump administration and the weakened US fiscal situation intensifying concerns among global investors.
