Elon Musk’s Tesla will begin offering energy services to homes in the UK
Tesla Receives Approval to Enter UK Home Energy Market
Elon Musk is set to introduce Tesla Energy as a new household energy provider in the UK, a move that is expected to connect closely with Tesla’s other offerings.
Despite strong criticism from Ed Miliband, Tesla has secured regulatory approval to supply electricity to both residential and business customers across Britain.
The licence, granted by Ofgem to Tesla’s subsidiary Tesla Energy Ventures, became effective after a thorough seven-month review by the energy regulator.
This decision opens the door for Tesla Energy to launch in the UK, with plans to integrate its services with Tesla’s electric vehicles and Powerwall home battery systems.
Tesla already operates an energy service in Texas, allowing customers to charge their vehicles at lower rates and sell surplus electricity back to the grid.
With this expansion, Tesla will now compete directly with established UK energy suppliers such as Octopus and British Gas.
Ofgem’s approval comes in the wake of public criticism from the UK’s Energy Secretary, who last year accused Musk of undermining community values and called for him to stay out of British politics.
Tesla has been preparing for this launch for some time, having received a separate licence for electricity generation in 2020 and hiring staff to support its retail energy operations.
The company applied for an electricity supply licence in July of the previous year, but has not sought a gas supply licence, meaning most households will still need a separate gas provider.
Now, Tesla must adhere to Ofgem’s regulations, which include requirements for fair customer treatment, financial stability, and transparent information sharing.
The regulator will oversee Tesla’s compliance and has the authority to impose penalties or restrict the company’s licence if necessary.
“Protecting consumers and ensuring a fair, secure energy market is at the heart of every licensing decision,” an Ofgem spokesperson stated. “After a comprehensive review, we have determined that Tesla Energy Ventures Limited fulfills all legal requirements to operate as an energy supplier and will be held to the same standards and oversight as other providers from the outset. We will continuously monitor compliance and act decisively if standards are not maintained.”
Tesla’s Position in the UK Energy Sector
Having sold over 250,000 vehicles in the UK, Tesla is well-positioned to disrupt the energy market. The company has also supplied tens of thousands of Powerwall batteries to British homes and offers home charging solutions for electric vehicles.
This established customer base gives Tesla a strong foundation for its new energy services. The company may also leverage “vehicle to home” technology, currently being tested, which allows car batteries to power homes.
Challenges Facing Tesla
The launch comes at a time when Tesla is experiencing a significant decline in sales, facing reduced demand and increased competition from lower-priced Chinese manufacturers.
Additionally, Tesla has faced public backlash related to Elon Musk’s political activities, including his support for Donald Trump, involvement in the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency, and his endorsement of far-right figures such as Germany’s AfD and Tommy Robinson.
Recent data from New Automotive shows that Tesla sold 2,208 vehicles in the UK last month, marking a drop of over 45% compared to the previous year.
