The S&P 500 index closed down 1.7% in the preliminary data, with the telecom sector dropping 3.5%, the technology sector down 2.7%, the industrial sector down 2.4%, and the energy sector up 1.5%.

The Nasdaq 100 Index preliminarily closed down 2.4%. Among its constituents, AppLovin preliminarily closed down 10.5%, Lam Research down 9.1%, Applied Materials, Seagate Technology, and Meta fell as much as 8.5%, AMD, Western Digital, Micron Technology, Intel, and KLA fell as much as 7.4%. CrowdStrike rose 1.7%, Diamondback Energy rose 3.1%, and Reuters rose 3.2%. NVIDIA preliminarily closed down 4%, leading declines among Dow Jones components. 3M, Boeing, Caterpillar, Goldman Sachs, and Amazon all fell at least about 2%, VZ rose 0.5%, Chevron rose 1.2%, and Salesforce rose 1.9%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 4.8%.
