Chicago Business Barometer - Softened to 52.8 in March
Chicago Business Barometer Sees Pullback
The Chicago Business Barometer, compiled in partnership with MNI, slipped by 4.9 points to reach 52.8, following three straight months of gains. Despite this decrease, the index has remained in expansionary territory for the past three months.
- The recent drop was mainly attributed to declines in Employment, Production, and New Orders.
- Increases in Order Backlogs and Supplier Deliveries helped to partially balance the overall downturn.
Employment fell by 12.8 points, returning to contraction after briefly rising above the 50 mark last month. Nevertheless, the current level is still well above where it stood at the close of 2025.
Production also declined, down 9.3 points, largely due to fewer respondents indicating higher output.
