Spot gold was little changed at $4,595 per ounce on Wednesday, after having dropped to near a one-month low of $4,555 per ounce in the previous session. Investors are waiting for remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Powell to assess the economic impact of the Iran war as peace talks have stalled.
Efforts to end the Iran conflict reached an impasse on Tuesday. Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Iran’s latest proposal, stating that Iran informed the United States the country is in a “state of collapse” and is trying to reorganize its leadership. Investors expect the Federal Reserve to keep rates unchanged after today’s meeting.
The World Bank said on Tuesday that if the worst destruction from the Middle East war ends in May, energy prices are expected to surge 24% by 2026, reaching their highest level since the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Oil prices closed up nearly 3% on Tuesday amid ongoing supply concerns due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department, mainland China’s net gold imports from Hong Kong reached 47.866 tonnes in March, up from 46.249 tonnes in February. This week, investors also focus on policy decisions from the European Central Bank, Bank of England, and Bank of Canada.
