As Thailand, Vietnam and other major durian-producing regions see bumper harvests, combined with the dual push from the “Durian Express” sea route and the China-Laos-Thailand Railway cold-chain trains, durian prices this year have plummeted compared to the same period last year, attracting large crowds of shoppers. “19.9 yuan per jin.” “Special price, 15 yuan per jin”... In recent days, every afternoon sees bustling voices in the markets. A visit revealed that the price of Golden Pillow durians on the day ranged between 18 and 26 yuan per jin, with some stalls offering special prices as low as 13.8 yuan per jin.“There are so many people, our sales have doubled compared to usual—it’s extremely busy!” said a vendor, whose hands never stopped working. She reported selling about 300 durians on that day, each packed in a large box containing five to six fruits, weighing over 30 jin in total. Roughly estimated, about 9,000 jin of durians were sold in a single day. The vendor added, “It’s durian season now. There are large arrivals in May, and there will be more every day ahead.”Recently, social media platforms have been buzzing with discussions like “just over 20 yuan per jin” and “price drops of 10 yuan in one day.” Offline market price reductions are even more pronounced; many consumers have started stocking up, and some supermarkets even sell out immediately after restocking. On April 30, a supermarket in Beijing's Haidian district marked durian prices down to 25.9 yuan per jin, a significant reduction from 39.9 yuan per jin the previous day. Wholesale prices have also fallen. According to Beijing Xinfadi market data, on April 20 the average wholesale price for Thai Golden Pillow durians was 27 yuan per jin, down 21.7% year-on-year; Vietnamese dry-shake durians were at 20 yuan per jin, down 57% year-on-year.Fruit science author and fruit industry practitioner Yang Xiaoyang pointed out that this year's durian supply timeline is consistent with previous years: supply begins in March, and Golden Pillow matures in April, both normal patterns. The main reason for falling prices is the concentrated ripening at the production end, causing a rapid increase in short-term supply. When many durians come onto the market at once, it's difficult for the market to absorb them fully in a short period. Even with strong demand, prices are bound to fall. Looking forward, industry insiders believe the May Day holiday will provide short-term support for prices, but if supply keeps increasing and demand drops after the holiday, prices may fall further. It is expected that mid-May retail prices may fall below 20 yuan per jin, entering the teens.
