Glonghui July 20|Wall Street legendary short seller, Chanos & Co. founder Jim Chanos bluntly stated that the current wave of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure investment is seeing capital inflows at an unprecedented speed and scale, but the underlying economic logic supporting this surge has yet to be validated, which is concerning. The current market is experiencing a typical “narrative over numbers” game, where investors are willing to pay a premium for corporate promises, yet care little whether real figures can be delivered. He warns that hundreds of billions of dollars in capital expenditures are based on short-term spot prices but are being used to support asset investment decisions that last twenty years, which presents a fundamental mismatch in maturities. Chanos’s core argument is that the capital efficiency of hyperscale cloud providers is systematically declining, which will force them to make real strategic shifts within the next 12 to 18 months. According to his estimates, for Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Oracle, the incremental return on invested capital has dropped from about 40% a year and a half ago to about 20% today; if the pace of capital expenditure continues unabated, that figure could fall further to 10%. Chanos stated, “At that point, the management teams of these companies will face a real question—should we continue burning money like this, or would it simply make more sense to buy Treasury bonds instead?” He expects that this showdown moment will likely emerge between the end of 2026 and 2027, and will be unavoidable. He summed up his observation of the current market pricing logic in one sentence: In a bull market, people pay a premium for promises; in a bear market, people only pay for discounted reality. We are clearly in the former right now. Will we move toward the latter? I don’t know.
