PayPal faces $53 billion takeover bid as Stripe and Advent International circle the payments giant

Stripe and Advent International have lobbed a joint unsolicited bid of more than $53 billion to acquire PayPal Holdings, offering roughly $60.50 per share. That price represents a premium of about 28% above where PayPal’s stock was trading before the news broke. PayPal’s board has responded with the corporate equivalent of “you can do better,” dismissing the offer as inadequate.

From Wall Street darling to takeover target

Stripe didn’t wake up one morning and decide to make a $53 billion play. The company had expressed preliminary interest in acquiring all or parts of PayPal as early as February 2026, meaning this courtship has been brewing for nearly five months.

PayPal’s stock surged nearly 17% when takeover rumors first surfaced around mid-July 2026. Analysts remain skeptical about whether Stripe and Advent will come back with a sweeter deal, particularly as PayPal’s market value has been under pressure amidst rising competition in the digital payments sector.

The stablecoin chess match nobody expected

PayPal operates PYUSD, its own stablecoin launched in partnership with Paxos. Stripe, meanwhile, acquired Bridge, a stablecoin-focused payments platform, giving it backend crypto plumbing that complements its merchant payment infrastructure.

A combined entity would effectively control both the consumer-facing stablecoin experience (PYUSD and PayPal’s massive user base) and the merchant-side stablecoin rails (Bridge and Stripe’s payment processing).

What this means for crypto investors

PYUSD’s future becomes particularly interesting in this scenario. Under a combined Stripe-PayPal umbrella, PYUSD could gain access to Stripe’s merchant network, potentially making it a default settlement option for cross-border payments and e-commerce transactions.

Traders should watch two things closely. First, whether Stripe returns with a revised bid, which would indicate genuine conviction that the crypto synergies justify paying up. Second, whether competing payment companies start making their own crypto infrastructure moves in response.
