BlackRock CEO Larry Fink highlights China’s lead in AI energy race

The world’s largest asset manager just told everyone what the real bottleneck for AI supremacy looks like. It’s not chips, not talent, not even capital. It’s electricity.

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink has been sounding the alarm about China’s aggressive energy infrastructure buildout, arguing that the country’s rapid deployment of nuclear and solar power gives it a decisive edge in what he calls the “AI energy race.” According to Fink, China is constructing approximately 100 GW of nuclear power and nearly 100 GW of solar power, a scale of investment that dwarfs anything happening in Western markets.

The energy bottleneck nobody wants to talk about

The 100 GW nuclear figure alone is staggering. For context, the entire US nuclear fleet currently operates at roughly 95 GW of capacity, built over decades. China is building that equivalent from scratch, and doing it alongside a similarly massive solar expansion.

“I believe there’s a race for technology dominance. I believe if we do not invest more, China wins.”

Western regulatory headwinds are making things worse

New York State enacted a moratorium on large data center construction on July 15, 2026, becoming the first US state to formally halt such projects. The decision was rooted in concerns about power grid constraints, the exact issue Fink has been warning about.

Fink made these points across multiple appearances, including a podcast with Bret Baier on March 12, 2026, and in BBC coverage on March 25, 2026.

What this means for investors

The market is already starting to price in this dynamic. Utility stocks like Constellation Energy, Vistra, and NextEra Energy have emerged as key names in the AI energy conversation.

Regulatory moratoriums like New York’s could create an uneven landscape where some states become AI energy hubs while others effectively opt out. That fragmentation could benefit specific utilities with capacity in permissive jurisdictions while stranding others.
