Bezos anticipates that, before long, millions of people will reside in outer space

According to the Financial Times, Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos made an uncommon public appearance at Italian Tech Week in Turin on Friday, where he predicted that within the next few decades, millions of people will reside in space.

During a conversation with John Elkann, a member of Italy’s Agnelli family, Bezos—who also established the aerospace company Blue Origin—asserted that people will choose to live in space primarily out of desire, with robots performing the labor-intensive tasks and enormous AI-powered data centers orbiting above.

Bezos’ comments seem somewhat like an attempt to outdo his competitor in the space industry. Elon Musk has long forecasted that humans will settle on Mars, even suggesting that by 2050, a million people could be living there—a date that isn’t far off. Perhaps both billionaires are out of touch, or maybe they’re privy to information the rest of us endlessly browsing Zillow aren’t aware of.

Bezos was similarly optimistic in other areas, describing the surge in AI investments as a positive form of bubble, since it is “industrial” rather than “financial.”

He reportedly proclaimed, “There’s never been a more exciting era to look forward to the future,” while, at least in our imagination, the audience in Turin exchanged hesitant looks.
