December Mortgage and Consumer Credit Trends
In December, individuals' net mortgage borrowing held steady at £4.6 billion, mirroring November's figure. The number of new mortgage approvals for home purchases dipped by 3,100, reaching a total of 61,000 for the month. Conversely, remortgage approvals experienced an increase of 1,600, bringing the total to 38,400 in December.
Net consumer credit borrowing saw a decline, falling to £1.5 billion in December from £2.1 billion the previous month. Of this, borrowing via credit cards dropped to £0.7 billion, compared to £1.0 billion in November. Other types of consumer credit, including personal loans and car finance, also contributed to the overall decrease.
