U.S. Consumer Confidence Sees Significant Decline in April

In April, American consumer confidence experienced a notable downturn, as reflected by the RealClearMarkets/TIPP Economic Optimism Index. The index, which serves as an early indicator of U.S. consumer sentiment each month, dropped to 42.8 from March’s 47.5—a decrease of 4.7 points, or 9.9%. This marks the eighth straight month the index has stayed below the neutral threshold of 50, signaling continued pessimism among consumers.

Compared to its long-term average of 49.1 over 303 months, April’s figure is 12.8% lower, highlighting a significant departure from typical optimism levels. Confidence among investors also slipped by 11.1% to 53.0, while non-investor sentiment decreased by 7.8% to 37.8, widening the gap between the two groups.
