On Friday night, during the most active trading hours in the global markets, markets presented an extremely unpredictable calm.
- Gold prices surged and then fell back slightly, oil prices rebounded slightly from their lows;
- US stock markets rose across the board;
- The 10-year US Treasury yield dropped to 4.35%.
First, today’s initial market rally was driven by speculation on the nonfarm payrolls data, continuing the pattern from Trump’s second term where major economic data routinely benefited the stock market. The data shows that the US job market remains robust (far exceeding market expectations), which theoretically reduces the justification for the Federal Reserve to cut rates. Strangely, the market interpreted this as positive news. Market expectations for a rate hike by year-end dropped from 23% to 18%. Meanwhile, the probability that the Federal Reserve will keep rates unchanged rose to 74.1%, up from 70.1% the previous day.
Second, the market’s movement in the second half of today depends on Iran’s response to the latest US proposal. So far, Iran has not given any response. US Secretary of State Rubio stated that the US looks forward to Iran responding today to the proposal to end the war, hoping “this is a serious proposal.”
CNN obtained an audio recording in which Iran warns ships to stay away from US warships. “Sometimes we need to use missiles and drones to teach the Americans a lesson,” a voice in the recording said.
Third, there is actually very little risk premium left in current asset prices. In other words, the market is now trading under an “almost perfect” expectation, leaving virtually no margin for error in case of surprises.
