Kustodia deploys peso-backed stablecoin escrow on Arbitrum for the Mexico P2P market

Mexico City, June 12, 2026 - Kustodia today detailed its MXNB-based smart contract escrow architecture on Arbitrum, which the company describes as the first peso-denominated, blockchain-auditable escrow settlement layer for Latin America's peer-to-peer marketplace economy. The integration uses MXNB, a 1:1 Mexican peso-backed stablecoin issued by Juno (a Bitso subsidiary) and audited quarterly by a Big Four accounting firm, as the custody currency. SPEI serves as the fiat entry and exit rail.

The design solves a core problem in applying blockchain escrow to emerging markets: foreign exchange exposure. Most crypto escrow platforms hold funds in USDC or ETH, meaning a Mexican seller who lists a vehicle at 180,000 pesos is exposed to USD/MXN currency fluctuations for the entire duration of the escrow. In a volatile week, that exposure can exceed the escrow fee itself.

“We don't ask our users to think about cryptocurrency,” said Rodrigo Jimenez, Founder and CEO of Kustodia. “A seller sends pesos via SPEI from their bank app. We hold those pesos in a smart contract, denominated in pesos, auditable by anyone. When delivery is confirmed, pesos arrive in the seller's bank account. The blockchain handles the trust layer. The user just sees their money arrive safely.”

The settlement architecture, step by step

When a Kustodia escrow is initiated, the buyer deposits the exact transaction amount in Mexican pesos to a unique SPEI account number generated by Kustodia's banking partner. Once the deposit is confirmed, an equivalent amount of MXNB is minted on Arbitrum and placed in Kustodia's smart contract. The contract locks those tokens - neither party can access them - under programmatic release conditions.

When both parties confirm the transaction is complete, the smart contract executes: MXNB tokens are burned on Arbitrum, and an equivalent SPEI transfer is sent to the seller's registered bank account in seconds. In plain terms: pesos go in via bank transfer, pesos come out via bank transfer, and the blockchain acts as the tamper-proof neutral custodian in between.

Every step is recorded on Arbitrum's public ledger and can be verified by anyone at any time, giving both the buyer and the seller independently auditable proof that the transaction happened exactly as agreed, with no possibility of fund misappropriation.

Why peso-backed over USDC

MXNB offers three advantages for LATAM escrow compared to USDC. Zero FX exposure: transactions stay in pesos from entry to exit. Regulatory alignment: MXNB reserves are audited quarterly by a Big Four firm, which satisfies the compliance requirements of enterprise marketplace partners. Local trust: Mexican users recognise the peso. Explaining “your 180,000 pesos are in USDC custody” is a harder conversation than “your pesos are in a verified digital vault.”

Kustodia has also deployed support for BRL1, a Brazilian real-backed stablecoin, for its planned 2027 Brazil expansion via the Pix payment rail: the same architecture applied to the world's second-largest instant payment system.

Market context

According to industry data, 62 percent of crypto-focused fintechs in Mexico already use stablecoins for payments and settlement. Kustodia's deployment extends MXNB's application from institutional B2B payment flows into consumer-scale P2P escrow - the first such retail application of the stablecoin.

For comparison, MercadoPago and Stripe Mexico do not offer escrow, blockchain verification, or peso-backed stablecoin settlement. Kustodia's pricing table, publicly available at kustodia.app, shows the platform charges 3 percent - less than both competitors' standard payment processing fees - while providing trust guarantees they cannot match.
