Galaxy: The threat of quantum computing to bitcoin is real, but it does not yet pose an imminent crisis; developers are already taking action to address it.
ChainCatcher news, according to CoinDesk, Galaxy Digital Head of Research Alex Thorn stated that the threat posed by quantum computing to bitcoin is real, but it does not currently constitute an imminent crisis. Investors should not misjudge this long-term technological challenge as a reason to immediately avoid bitcoin. Thorn pointed out that the current risk is limited to specific addresses whose public keys have already been exposed on-chain, including reused addresses, some addresses held by custodial institutions, and assets in legacy address formats. Analysis by security firm Project Eleven shows that about 7 million BTC (approximately 470 billions USD at recent prices) are in such "long-term exposure" status, but remain safe under existing quantum computing capabilities. In terms of countermeasures, developers have advanced several solutions, including introducing new address types based on post-quantum cryptography, implementing a "hourglass" mechanism to restrict spending permissions for permanently exposed public key addresses, and fundamentally reducing the broadcast of public keys in transactions through phased upgrade paths.
